Discovery launches Planet Green

That’s right: Everyone’s favorite cable network (besides NatGeo and Showtime, of course) has launched its sparkly new eco-living channel — Planet Green. Tune in for info on how to green up your life, save big on energy bills, and to watch green celebrities talk about their favorite gadgets and eco-practices. The website isn’t very user friendly, but it already has an insane amount of information and resources. I dare say it’s heaven for a greenie like me. I especially like their Fashion & Beauty and Travel & Outdoors sections. Check out all those usable eco tips!

Sea Buckthorn, baby

Can I wax poetic for a minute about my new favorite antioxidant? Sea Buckthorn is popping up in all sorts of body care products — mostly skin care, it seems — and it is yummy. I first dabbled in sea buckthorn after Weleda sent me samples of its delicious hand cream and body oil, which have a light citrus-like scent and velvety texture that made them instant favorites. Now I use the body oil compulsively on my roughest parts (think elbows and cuticles, people).

Despite its name, sea buckthorn has absolutely nothing to do with the ocean at all. Rather, it’s a drought-resistant shrub used in food in the far East and Russia. It’s currently gaining prominence in the United States for its awesome nutrient content. The fruits of the sea buckthorn are rich in amino acids and vitamin C — it has more of this crucial antioxidant than oranges, tomatoes, and strawberries. And notably, it contains high concentrations of the antioxidant vitamin E, which accounts for its anti-inflammatory, healing properties. As Americans become more familiar with this antioxidant-laden ingredient, we’re bound to see it on more and more product labels. For now, check out Weleda’s fabulous line of sea-buckthorn-based products.

Eating for workouts

Last Sunday, I biked 65 miles in an organized bike race. It was my first long ride of the summer, and I really wavered on what I should eat to give myself strength and energy over the long haul. Should I down a plate of pasta before bed? Would all those carbs pay off big at mile 55 when I would normally lose steam? In short, does loading up on all kinds of simple carbs actually benefit athletic stamina, or is it just an old wives tale propagated for decades by the spaghetti marketing board?

According to today’s New York Times, what you eat and when you eat it might not have much of an effect on performance at all. In fact, it asserts that the long-held notion that you should eat carbohydrates and protein in a ratio of 4 to 1 before an “event” doesn’t really hold up and that for the average weekend warrior like myself, eating “real food at regular meals” may be the true key to solid athletic performance. In any case, the article is interesting for its in-depth look at how muscles work. (Or you could check out our June Wellness story, “Muscle Up,” for a solid primer.)

I ended up settling on a breakfast of two hard-boiled eggs, electrolyte drink — which probably didn’t help much but to make staying hydrated a little bit more interesting — and a constant flow of salty, sweet snacks throughout the day. I then packed in some serious barbecue after the ride. Interestingly, I was craving salty snacks for days afterward.

Grape juice benefits

You’ll notice in our just-out June issue a letter from a reader asking whether grape juice offers the same heart-health benefits as red wine. According to a 2004 research study, grape juice might be even better — the good stuff in juice gets more absorbed into your body, and of course there’s no alcohol to tax your systems. That’s good news for me because I love grape juice, especially now that companies are making it sans all the extra sweeteners. First Blush grape juices are a new fave; made with varietal (read: wine-type) grapes, they’re refreshing and healthy without any sugar. Yet another good way to get your daily nutrients. image001.jpg
