Organic chocolate hemp milk = yum!

The weather is warming up here in Boulder, and I’ve been completely addicted to a daily chug of chilled Manitoba Harvest Organic Hemp Bliss Chocolate Hemp Milk. With 1,200 mg omega-3 fatty acids (and healthy doses of omega-6s and omega-9s) and 5 grams of protein per cup, it’s like a mini-meal with a cocoa kick. The earthy hemp flavor isn’t for everyone, but this nondairy milk is smooth and nutritious and won’t spike your blood sugar like rice or other grain-based milks.

Canada recognizes danger of bisphenol A

A suspected hormone disrupter, bisphenol A is a compound found in many types of consumer plastic. There is currently no regulation regarding its use in the U.S., but Canada is taking steps to declare it a dangerous substance. Here is Healthday’s report…

Health Canada is expected to declare bisphenol A a dangerous substance, the Globe and Mail reported Tuesday. It would be the first regulatory body in the world to make that determination and to take steps to control human exposure to the chemical. Bisphenol A is one of the most widely used synthetic chemicals in the world and is found in a wide range of products. Experts are concerned about the use of the hormonally active chemical in food and beverage containers. “Bishphenol A is in every Canadian home. It threatens the health of every Canadian. Moving against it would be a hugely significant victory for public health and the environment,” Rick Smith, executive director of the group Environmental Defence, told the Globe and Mail. A declaration by Health Canada that bisphenol A is a possible threat will put pressure on American and European regulators to re-consider the status of the chemical. “If this chemical is listed as toxic (by Health Canada), it will be an internationally significant decision,” Smith said.

How many vegetarians/vegans?

Coincidentally on the heels of my last postVegetarian Times just sent out news that 3.2 percent of U.S. adults, or 7.3 million people, are vegetarian, and 1 million of those are vegan (0.5 percent). A bunch more people, 10 percent according to VT, “largely follow a vegetarian-inclined diet.” According to our surveys, that’s the DL reader: last time I checked, about 8 percent of our readers say they’re vegetarian or vegan. That’s why we emphasize vegetable-based dishes, but we also include some meat and other animal products (healthy versions, of course!). How does our recipe mix strike you? Would you like to see more of a certain kind of recipe?

New vegan cookbooks

Our wonderful Shared Services guy, Eric, is my resident vegan expert; in fact, I think he’s the first vegan I met, way back when I first started at DL. So when I recently received a whole slew of vegan cookbooks in the mail, I turned to him to evaluate the best. more
