Free research portal
As of today, research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) must be made public within a year despite uproar from the country’s top medical journals, who still enjoy charging ginormous subscription fees. The free public database of information will be accessible to all of us science geeks looking for the latest and greatest NIH health research. Previously, only select abstracts were made available on Pubmed.com. We’ll still have to wait to find out if the new database is as difficult to use as the old one, but it seems that the effort toward transparency will improve the public’s ability to access the information we’re helping to pay for.
