Banana Republic’s green collection

In case you stopped by the mall on Monday, you might have noticed Banana Republic’s newest fashion foray: Gap Inc. and BR launched a 50-piece “Green Collection” complete with bamboo-fabric tops, organic cotton dresses, and lots of chartreuse leaf patterns. Is Banana’s new offering my favorite so far? Not really, though I do appreciate the purchasing power of large companies like Gap Inc., as well as their potential to generate awareness. (Maybe I still have niggling skepticism left over from Gap’s sweat-shop days.) In any case, the initiative BR is taking to raise awareness is pretty cool. The company says

Banana Republic will donate up to 1 percent of sales, up to $100,000, from purchases made between April 22 – 27 to The Trust for Public Land. This Earth Week initiative is the first step toward the brand’s $1 million commitment to The Trust for Public Land.

For more eco-conscious companies, check out our story “Planet-Friendly Threads” in this month’s issue. And if you know of any chic clothing companies rocking eco-friendlier fibers, I’d love to hear about them!
