Smart moms take on school lunches

What happens when two moms—Amy Kalafa, a documentary filmmaker, and Dr. Susan Rubin, a nutritionist/activist—team up to tackle the poor state of America’s school lunches? A film called Two Angry Moms. Rubin is the founder of the organization Better School Food, and the film documents her crusade for healthier food choices in schools over the course of a year. Here’s an excerpt of the description on Better School Food’s website:

“The duo travel to Washington D.C. where they meet with a reluctant USDA spokesperson, and Susan finds herself as the only unpaid citizen-advocate at a public hearing on school food. Two Angry Moms offers an inside look at what’s on the menu in many of the nation’s school cafeterias and captures the step-by-step transformation of one dedicated Westchester, NY school district. Part exposé, part “how to”, the film goes beyond why and how schools have been infiltrated by junk food peddlers, to demonstrate workable strategies for replacing the junk with real, whole food. Existing models in schools from Connecticut to California offer instruction as well as inspiration.”

Get more information on screenings and how you can work to get the junk out of your local schools by visiting the the Two Angry Moms and Better School Lunches websites.
