Oats’ heart benefits

During frigid months, I tend to start my day with a hot bowl of oatmeal. While certainly not the most exciting breakfast (egg and cheese croissants, anyone?), it’s probably the smarter choice when it comes to my heart. That may come as no surprise; after all, the FDA has backed oats’ heart-health properties for over a decade now. The good news is, unlike some claims, this one has stood up to the test of time: A recent review of research since 1992 confirmed that consuming whole-grain oats indeed reduces harmful LDL cholesterol. I may have to come up with new ways to jazz up my oatmeal (dried blueberries?, a dash of ginger?), but it’s a habit worth keeping.
